Windows Phone 7系列宣布不久微软就透露，Windows Phone 7系列发布后Windows Mobile 6.x并不会消亡，而是被重命名为Windows Phone Classic经典，并与Windows Phone 7系列共存。日前微软高级产品经理Michael Chang再次重申了微软对Windows Mobile 6.5的态度，表示不会放弃Windows Mobile 6.5。
Michael Chang表示，虽然与此前的Windows Mobile操作系统相比，Windows Phone 7“在代码级别上有所突破”，但是其推广并不是一朝一夕的事，况且很多用户仍想要使用Windows Mobile 6.5，对WM 6.5重命名前，微软将提供Windows Mobile 6.5.3升级，进一步增强用户体验。
微软曾表示，由于Windows Phone7对硬件规格的要求十分严格，因此现有的Windows Mobile 6.x手机无法将系统升级至Windows Phone 7，包括HTC发布不久的堪称***端WM手机的HD2。此外，Windows Mobile 6.x的应用程序也无法在WP7上运行。
